The title “editor” can have many meanings. We mostly think of copy that needs to be edited and corrected before it can be published. However, there are story budgets to create. Staff to evaluate and train. Managerial policies to implement. Projects to plan and manage. Customers and readers to meet. In my roles at The Greenville News, Tribune-Times and even at Cross Country Printing, I honed many “editor” skills:

  • Writing and editing copy (versed in AP Style)

  • Shooting and editing photos for stories and galleries

  • Website management

  • Print design

  • Project planning and management

  • Shooting and editing video

  • Managing, coaching and motivating people

  • Hiring and coordinating freelancers/contributors

I have also done contract editing and consulting work for Community Journals, publishers of Greenville Journal and Upstate Business Journal. If you’ve read it in the Upstate, my editing has probably been involved with it at one point. A few examples:

  • Upstate Parent — Editor in chief; planned content, assigned stories and photos, edited all content

  • TALK Greenville — Copy editor; edited all content for print and web publication

  • The Greenville News — Special sections, Guide to Greenville; assigned, managed and edited copy

  • Greenville Journal/Upstate Business Journal — Have served as interim editor, consultant, contract editor

  • Cliffs Magazine — Contract editing

Simpsonville Directory and Newcomers Guide

Published annually through 2015

For many years, the Custom Publications Department of The Greenville News produced directories and guides for Upstate chambers of commerce, including Fountain Inn, Simpsonville, Mauldin and Easley. I met with the chambers to coordinate content goals, and then developed a production schedule and story budget. I also edited all copy and toned many of the photos. Once complete, PDF flipbooks of the products were placed online.

Destination Greenville

Published annually

This was one of the largest annual projects for the Custom Publications Department at The Greenville News. Each year, I developed a project plan, managed (and performed) layout and design, and coordinated printing. Photos were checked and toned, and I designed the cover. Once complete, a PDF flipbook was placed online.
